Men’s rugby falls to Ave Maria in final minute

Rugby can be a cruel game. The men’s rugby team learned that the hard way today.
Eckerd held a three point lead with under a minute to play before an errant pass was intercepted by Ave Maria and run back for a try to give Ave Maria a 19-17 victory.
The Tritons had pressed the Papists forward just outside ten meters from the try line when the pass was thrown by Sophomore Rob Mabry. “We won the scrum and I tried to send it wide across the field and it just got tipped,” Mabry said. The opposing wing player read the play and intercepted it, Mabry said.
During the first half, the Tritons also lost Senior prop Melbert Schwarz to an injury to his right leg during a scrum. Despite the loss, Senior Duncan MacLeod was subbed on for the injured Schwartz and provided fresh energy to a side that had performed poorly in first half scrums winning only four of the 12 in the first half.
Coach David Hedges was not impressed by what he saw in the game, noting that until this game, the Tritons have been very good in scrum situations. “The scrum just didn’t perform today.” Hedges also stated that after the loss it was unlikely even with a victory over Miami next week that the Tritons would enter postseason play.
