Conditions were cold and windy as Eckerd took fourth place at the second home regatta of the semester Feb. 16-17. After a previously warm weekend with somewhat unfavorable wind, sailors took to a cold sea under a cloudy sky just off our own South Beach.
With sailors in both the Charleston Spring Co-ed Open and the USF Women’s Open, Eckerd hosted the Mendelblatt Team Race. In contrast to the races that rely on each pair of sailors to race individually for the group time, in a team race each school represented has multiple boats that must all finish in single races.
Five teams competed for the number one spot, but all fell short to Stanford University, taking first place. Eckerd would fall to the number four spot with the conclusion of the team racing.
Freshman Heidi Carlson considered the weekend good practice, being their first team race. “[The weekend] showed us what went well and what we need to work on for the upcoming regattas,” Carlson said.
While away, Eckerd also placed 11 of 18 at Charleston and 4 of 8 at USF. The Tritons’ next home regatta will be March 20 at the Eckerd Intersectional.
