Women’s golf wrapped up their first spring tournament this past weekend at the 9th Annual Start 2 Finish Sports & More Classic in Lake Wales, Fla.
Hosted by Webber International University, the tournament began Saturday, Feb. 17, and went on until Monday morning. The Tritons had to brave chilly conditions the first day with 10-15 mph winds and a wind chill of about 25 degrees.
“You really had to survive the first 9 holes,” said Head Coach Bill Buttner. “We started at 7:15 in the morning with no sun and frost. We had to get out there and get used to the weather.”
After an hour and a half delay due to frost, the Tritons played their first round. Junior Mara Shingleton led the team with an 89, followed closely by Senior Jennee Vandestyne’s 93. Sophomore Whitney Edwards shot a personal-best 98 while Junior Christina Brewster was just one stroke behind with 99, to give the Tritons a total score of 379.
In the final round, the Tritons finished with a 307. Shingleton shot 84, Vanderstyne shot 89, Edwards had 96 and Brewster shot 101.
“Despite the conditions, I think we played well,” said Edwards. “We all showed signs of improvement and we worked hard to get where we are. If we keep up our work ethic, it’ll lead to a good season.”
The Lady Tritons will continue their spring season at the Warner University Golf Classic Invitational March 4-5 in Sebring, Fla.
